How does “The Lottery” prevent the breakdown of society in this community?
It is a communal sacrifice that was, at one time, steeped in tradition and meaning-it was part of their culture. Now the Scapegoat aspect of it gives people a thrill and allows them to the illusion of good fortune or crops by sacrificing someone.
