There are the names of course. Mr. Summers officiating over a very dark tradition. Mr. Graves involved with a tradition that will put someone in the grave. There is the lottery itself which is usually synonymous with good luck and winning. Nobody "wins" in this story as the morbid execution of Tessie unfolds. It is also ironic that nobody in the village really knows why they are having the lottery in the first place.
