The Lottery and Other Stories

The lottery 1948

In what ways are the characters differentiated from one another? Looking back at the story can you see why Tessie Hutchinson is singled out as the winner

The characters all have names, which are ironic and symbolic. There is Mr. Summers, who is in charge of a very morbid task. There is Mr. Graves, which reflects the deadly tradition the town follows. The characters are separated by gender and age. Mr. Hutchinson randomly drew the black dot and Tessie eventually drew the second one. Tessie's initial very light hearted attitude towards the lottery is in stark contrast to her intense rejection of the lottery once she is singled out as the winner/victim. This underlines just one of the many layers of irony in the story.
