7-)Many modern customs or rituals have developed from primitive origins (for example,the decoration of a Christmas tree).Can you identify some others?What would set them apart from the ritual stoning in this story?

There are not a lot of collective secular customs in the West. Halloween might be one. Although Christmas is a Christian belief, it is widely recognised as a secular holiday as well. In the Lottery, most villagers had very little knowledge of why the lottery is conducted. I think there might be more knowledge about the origins of Halloween and Christmas.
