how does this lottery differ from what we usually think of as a lottery? why would people conduct a lottery such as this?

This lottery was continued as a long standing village tradition. Unlike the lotterys we're used to, winnng the lottery was no prize, as the prize was stoning. We expect money..... they envisioned and tolerated the possibility of public execution.
