The marginalization of women is certainly a perversion of democracy. Tessie Hutchinson is seen as the property of her husband. When she arrives late, to completer her dishwashing, it is her husband that is addressed and not Tessie herself. Tessie's grown daughters "belong" to their husbands. the patriarchal mechanics of the community give women virtually no choice in their fate.
