The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny Background

Kiran Desai's The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny was published in 2025 and is set in Vermont, as well as New York. Bored and lonely in the snowy mountains of Vermont, Sonia contacts an artist named Sunny, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. Over time, they grow closer to each other; however, Sunny hampers Sonia's life. Meanwhile, Sunny is lonely too, and strikes up a friendship with someone from Delhi, India. Together, the navigates feelings of loneliness and isolation in a world (and other questions of life) that is seemingly so connected and busy.

Upon release, the novel was met with very positive reviews from critics and normal people alike. For instance, former President Barack Obama named Desai's novel as one of his favorites of 2025. In their glowing review, The New York Times called the "long-awaited" novel a "transcendent triumph" that "is among those most rarefied books: better company than real-life people." The novel's positive reviews were reflected in its sales, as it became a New York Times bestseller shortly after its release.
