The poem depicts a poverty stricken little girl, who sells matches in order to buy food. She is afraid of going home empty handed because she fears a beating from her father. The little girl stayed out so long that she was frozen with cold and lit a match to warm her hands.... her exhaustion and cold were victorious, however, and she was found dead in the morning.
