Introduction to The Little Foxes

One of Lillian Hellman's most famous plays, The Little Foxes, is the story of a family that destroys itself. The Hubbard brothers, Oscar and Ben, have decided to invest in bringing a cotton mill to their town in the American South in 1900; they want their sister Regina's husband Horace to come on as a partner, leading Regina to leverage their need to take a greater share of the profits. She leaves open the possibility that this imbalance could eventually be righted by her brother Oscar's son, Leo, marrying her daughter, Alexandra. However, Regina's mortally ill husband, Horace, refuses to be part of the deal. Hearing this, Oscar dispatches his son, Leo, with Ben's approval, to steal...
