Lewis writes "deep down inside him he really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel." Why did Edmund try to convince himself the White Witch wasn't all that bad?

The White Witch gives Edmund all he desires, she tricks him into complacency with Turkish Delight. Thank goodness he realizes his mistake before it's too late.
