The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

In what ways does the American Revolution serve as a backdrop to the characters and events in the story?

Also... What are some examples?

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is built around the legend of a Hessian soldier who lost his head (to a cannon ball) during the Revolutionary War. Ichabod Crane, fascinated by the tale, sinks deeper and deeper into the tale until he becomes a part of it and disappears forever.
