The Last Lecture Irony

The Last Lecture Irony

Away from home

Randy discovered that he was going to die a few months before he gave his last lecture. He considered it to be fitting that he will end his life with a last lecture. His wife however was not as supportive in the beginning as Randy would have hoped. By doing the lecture, it meant that Randy was going to be away from home and thus he would not get to spend the last days of his life with his family. This is ironic for Jai who considers that Randy should stay at home with them in the last months of his life instead of working.

From our own home

When Randy tells his wife that the reason he wanted to hold his last lecture was because he wanted to offer his children something before he died his wife noted ironically that he can do the same from their own living room, that is to record himself while giving his children advice about life. He refused to do so because he claimed that would not have the same effect on their children.

Lucky man

The situation in which Randy found himself in was less than ideal, namely the fact that he was a young man who was going to die in a couple of months. But he did not see his situation as being hopeless or tragic. Instead, almost ironically, he considered himself as being a lucky man despite the situation he found himself in.

Don’t want to play

Randy remembers that he was young, he was not interested in football at all. In fact, when his father wanted to take him and enrolled him in a football league, he was so against the idea that he threw a tantrum. Ironically however, when he grew up, Randy began to love the sport and even played it in college frequently.

Let your children destroy your house

When Randy talks about raising children, he gives the parents an unusual advice when raising their children, something that many considers as being ironic. Randy tells their parents to let their children draw on their walls and do damage to their house because it helps their creativity. This is ironic for many parents who listened to him and who were told all their lives that letting their children destroy their house is wrong.
