The Lais of Marie de France

What is a “lai,” and how do these poems fit into the form? How do these poems draw upon folktales or fables for didactic (educational) purposes? Discuss relations between men and women in all three works. Do you agree with the “lessons” in the text?

A Lai is a medieval short-story, a tale, used in French literature. Lais are primarily written in octosyllabic verse, and they most often deal with subjects of Celtic origin. Stories of Arthur or the Round Table are an example.
