The Lais of Marie de France

Find the characteristic traits of the courteous society in "Chevrefoil" .

In the thesis it is written that "courtesy takes shape in the aristocratic society of the twelfth century and is based on an ideal of social relations and an original conception of love. The values โ€‹โ€‹of courtesy echo those of feudalism : loyalty, modesty, discretion and generosity are in order, brutality is excluded" but I am not able to find any exemples of this in the text.

Marie's greatest literary accomplishment in the Lais is the way she celebrates the chivalrous court culture of her day while subtly and consistently lambasting it. The search for fame and self-glorification works in direct contrast to the charity and selflessness that Marie prizes as the most virtuous of loves. The pursuit of celebrity and women works against people who otherwise love one another (like in "Milun"), and makes it hard to remain selfless.
