The Lady's Not for Burning Themes

Heresy

Jennet is accused of being a witch and Thomas claims to be the devil. A witch hunt is called upon by the people to find Jennet. They are both arrested for these claims which cause an uproar in the township. While in jail, Jennet tells Thomas that she’s being labeled a witch because people believe he turned a man into a dog. She is almost burned at the stake before the man claimed to be turned into a dog returns safely. Thomas maintains that he is the devil. His reason might be because he wanted to be punished for allegedly killing two people and the Mayor wouldn’t take him seriously. It was a sure way of getting people’s attention.

Deceit

Thomas is trying to deceive everyone he is a murderer so that he may be punished because he finds humanity to be disgusting. Nicholas tries to deceive Alizon into marrying him by claiming to have killed his brother Humphrey in a love battle for Alizon’s hand in marriage. When Richard is planning to escape together with Alizon, he lies to Margaret about the whereabouts of Alizon to keep her from knowing the truth. While Jennet is set to hang, Humphrey uses Jennet’s situation to try to seduce her in exchange for her freedom.
