Why does Hassan confess to a crime he does not commit?

Hassan confesses to the theft because he knows it was Amir who set him up. When your best friend avoids you and sets you up to take the blame for a theft there is a huge problem. Hassan understands that telling Baba what he knows and denying the theft will only bring him further punishment.
