What steps did Amir have to take in order to bring Sohrab home?

Amir had to go to the house where Sohrab was being held by the Taliban. Amir then fought Assef for the right to remove Sohrab, and although, they were supposed to fight to the death, Sohrab ended the fight when he shot Assef's eye out with a sling-shot.
