Amir is referring to relationships, as often out relationships with others cause us to act in one way or another. The most important person in Amir's life was Baba..... he would have done anything to gain his father's love and approval. For Hassan..... the most important person was Amir. What happens to the relationship of each of these characters is directly affected by the one they love most.
