There is always the backdrop of war in this novel. The Soviet Union is helping the Communists in Afghanistan fight the Islamist Mujahideen who are backed by the United States. Eventually the Soviet Union leave the country and the militant Islamist Taliban take over. Afghanistan becomes a theocracy.
