I think both Amir and Baba try to ignore or run away from their problems and sins. Baba, an important man, remains aloof for much of the novel. He doesn't acknowledge his role in Hassan's life or even in Amir's for that matter. Amir doesn't find out that Hassan was his half brother until after Baba died. Amir too remains aloof from Hassan. One can even argue that he runs away to America to hide from the intense guilt he feels. Amir, determined to atone for his sins, returns to a very dangerous Afghanistan to bring back Hassan's child.
