A Long Way Gone is based on real events in the recent history of Afghanistan. The fall of the monarchy, the invervention of the Soviets in their country, and the mass exodus of Afghan refugees to the countries of the United States and Pakistan are all real events, as is the take over of the country by the Taliban.
