What has Jurgis learned that seperates him from the "stinking" bums at the police station?

Jurgis gets a "job" in a petty crime organization. He thinks this separates him from the other bums in the station.

Actually, he learns that they all have more in common than he'd once believed. From the text;

"The last time he was there, Jurgis had thought of little but his family; but now he was free to listen to these men, and to realize that he was one of them--that their point of view was his point of view, and that the way they kept themselves alive in the world was the way he meant to do it in the future."

Note: Jurgis had not yet gone to work for Duane; they became reaquainted at the police station. Jurgis goes to jail after his altercation with the bartender over the $100.
