Are you referring to when Jurgis attacks Connor? Jurgis was angry that Connor raped Ona and brought her to the brothel. Although Jurgis took the law into his own hands, there were not any laws protecting Ona at the time. Beating Connor up may not have been "ethical" but it was very understandable.
