Greed is a major motivation throughout the novel. The greed of the factory owners, who produce poor quality products (actually deadly), the greed of the unions that took advantage of the workers in the same way the owners did, and the greed of those who conned hard working people into purchasing homes that didn't exist as advertized. Jurgis, his family, and his friends are surrounded by the greed of others, all of which serves to keep them broke, and in the end..... it simply breaks them.
