Food is a very important part of the Chinese culture, and food choices represent represent a myriad of different feelings..... everything from postive thoughts, to luck, prosperity, and fertility. Thus, the foods eaten in the novel represent the different hopes, wishes, and experiences and changes in the family's lives.
