Father and the older children have a conversation about learning Mandarin Chinese. How does this conversation connect with other parts of the story?

Over the course of the conversation, the older children complain about having to learn Chinese and only Chinese. When Father questions their lack of complaints about other languages, the children rationalize their preferences based upon the other languages being scientific. Once again... cultural eduation is seen as unimportant.
