Why did Mr marvel want to resign from being griffins sidekick?

Mr. Marvel actually tried to sneak away from Griffin but Griffin caught up with him and no doubt punished him. He also threatened to kill Mr Marvel if he tried stealing from him and leaving him again. Although Marvel is promised riches, he no longer wanted to be a part of Griffin’s plans. Griffin however was too imposing and would not let Marvel quit.
