Wilde saw this play as a kind of Victorian melodrama.  He generally was trying to satirically portray the rather superficial lives of the upper class British people during the time that Wilde lived.  The two main women in the story - Gwendolen and Cecily - are fascinated by the name Ernest; Gwendolen is the upper-class, sophisticated snob while Cecily seems more real and down to earth.
