In developing his characters, Gosh creates a distinct line between those who are conservationalists, and those who have lived and worked in the village all of their lives. In certain circumstances, the characters are stereotypical. Piya, for example, is educated.... a beacon of green politics, though she is unprepared for the environment in which she finds herself. Fokir, in the other hand, is uneducated and disrespected by those who consider themselves superior, and yet, he is also the character who is best educated on the environment in which he lives. His education and ecological knowledge are based on experience... the real world.
