The Hunger Games

Why is this novel so compelling to young people?

It is very popular with my students and I am keen to know why.

It's great! I just finished it because I have heard so much about it. I think what might appeal to students is that it's gritty. It is not sugar coated Disney fare that they are usually served up. The protagonist is a tough female but not unrealistic. She is likable but not necessarily lovable. This makes the first person point of view feel realistic. The story moves quickly, not getting bogged down in melodramatic love stories that might turn off many male readers. The premise, although dark and dystopia- like, is accessible to younger readers. The characters are relatable and really, what teenager would not enjoy reading about a twenty four kid battle royal in the woods? Iā€™m really looking forward to the movie version coming out in 2012.
