Katniss lives with her mother and sister, Prim. Her father is dead, and Katniss helps to support the family by hunting and gathering roots, things she learned from her father before he was killed in an explosion at the mine.

Becasue of that, her mother never moved and never watched her kids, so katniss had to be the mom and the dad. She raised Prim, fed them both and took care of them as well.
