What does Matt learn about Tom? How does this explain EL Patron's favoring Matt and his rejection of Tom (chapter 5-13)?

In Chapter Thirteen?

Matt learns that Tom is MacGregor's son.

El Patron takes Matt's side because Matt is his clone. Tom is merely another man's son.
