Who inspired Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes?

I don't know that the answer to this question can be found in the book, but Doyle's real life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes was Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell was a lecturer and teacher at Doyle's medical school.
