The opening exchange reveals that Holmes is always able to outdo Watson with his genius, though the latter constantly works to impress his mentor. It is important to note that Holmes is extremely fond of Watson and calls him a "conductor of light." Watson, on the other hand, is never jealous of Holmes and always attempts to be more like him.

Sherlock Holmes never guesses, he is rational, and everything he says comes from facts and observation. Emotion plays no part in his deductions. Dr. Watson, however, is an "everyman". He tries to detach himself emotionally, but he is unable to disengage.
