Holmes comes to the conclusion that Mortimer received the walking stick as a gift from a hospital, where he was a student. From this, he also concludes that Mortimer is a young man, who's left the hospital and has established his practice in the country. He also adds that Mortimer must be absent-minded, amiable, unambitious and a dog owner..... based on the teeth marks on the cane.
