The Hound of the Baskervilles

Though Mr.Stapleton is not convincing in his explanation of the reason for the sound what explanation does he give ? ( chapter 7&8 )

Stapleton has a few ideas about the sound. He thinks it is coming from the mud settling or the water rising in the bog, or a peculiar bird.
