How is Dr. Mortimer a superstitious man?

Though a man of science (he is interested in the study of skulls), he somewhat accepts the legend of the hound because of a lack of evidence to the contrary. There is so little evidence with which to construct a rational explanation, other than the myth of the hound, that even Dr. Mortimer is driven to consider occult possibilities.
