An intermediate hist would be a host where the virus could establish itself. The four possibilities for intermediate hosts cited on Page 37 of the text were insects, rats, spiders, and reptiles. According to the text each of these hosts might be a possibility, but unfortunately, the origin of the virus couldn't be located because the monkeys had been trapped in a number of different places. Because the monkeys were getting sick and dying so quickly, scientists became convinced that one of these other hosts carried the virus, which then infected the monkeys.
