Hey, although our pages don't match, I think that you might be referring to the sound of the flying deer, "There was a flying sound of hooves on the path ahead." Again this is mentioned a paragraph down, The sound of hooves quickly falter and then go still. They don't see the dear very well but they can tell where it is and what it is doing by the sound of its hoofs.
