in chapters 1-3 what important feature on the map does elrond later pont out to gandalf and thorin?

Elrond is able to interpret all kinds of symbols and language on Thorin's map. He is able to read the moon-letters. These are letters that are only visible when the moon is in a certain place in the night sky. Elrond is able to decipher the entrance to Lonely Mountain.
