Hoe dose the scenery change as they approach the Lonely Mountain?

As the group approaches the mountain, the landscape becomes a barren wasteland, a place called the Desolation of the Dragon.

How does the change in the setting affect the characters and the tone of the narrative? please I don't know the answer and it's on my H.W.
