At first Bilbo thinks it is suicide and not for a gentle Hobbit like him. Bilbo has a fit and passes out. The dwarves' plan is way too dangerous for a Hobbit. When he comes to, Bilbo volunteers out of pride from Gandalf's glowing description of him as a top notch burglar.

Bilbo couldn’t bear it any longer. At may never return he began to feel a shriek coming up inside, and very soon it burst out like the whistle of an engine coming out of a tunnel.
