Bilb's discourse with the trolls is much simpler than his discourse with Smaug. The trolls are not very smart. Bilbo is able to manipulate them quite easily. Smaug is very intelligent. Smaug and Bilbo use logic to outsmart each other. They have a competition with intricate riddles.
