1. What made her speech relevant to the audience?

America lives in a racially charged time. It also contends with class conflict. Amanda's speech was one of unification of the country. The poem suggests that there is a better way for America to move forward than polarization. Finally, it celebrates the struggle of black Americans like Amanda for a better life.
