“They catch you with those,” the knowledgeable one said, “and it’s double sentence and kalte kost as well.” Kalte kost—the bread ration alone without the daily plate of hot food—was the punishment constantly held over our heads. If we made too much noise we’d have kalte kost. If we were slow with the bucket it would be kalte kost. But even kalte kost would be a small price to pay, I thought as I stretched my aching body on the foul straw, for the precious books I clutched between my hands."
