Passage analysis quotes

  • "I should be used to my two worlds colliding, but I never know which Starr I should be. I can use some slang, but not too much slang, some attitude, but not too much attitude, so I’m not a “sassy Black girl.” I have to watch what I say and how I say it, but I can’t sound “white.” Shit is exhausting." In context, Starr feels her two worlds colliding when Carlos has a barbeque, and her friends from school meet her family and friends from Garden Heights. Starr walks the line between her two worlds, and changes herself to fit in with the group she is with. And even though, Starr has worked hard to keep the “Williamson Starr” and “Garden Heights Starr” separate, at this time, she is overwhelmed by the fact that she must balance both identities at the same time.
