The novel is composed of 5 parts and 26 chapters. Each part is titled with the amount of time it has been since the shooting, except for the first part, which is titled “When it happens” [2]. The final part is titled “Thirteen Weeks After it – The Decision,” because it deals with the grand jury's decision not to indict Officer Cruise for Khalil's death and the aftermath of this decision. Parts 3 and 4 consist of one chapter each, and these chapters are set aside as interludes to the main events of the story. In these chapters, Starr is finally asserting herself in her personal life. In Part 3, Chapter 20, she hits Hailey for saying negative things about Khalil, finally severing the toxic friendship. In Part 4, Chapter 21, the family has a party at Uncle Carlos' house for Seven's graduation and Starr comes to the conclusion that she can relax and be herself around her family and Chris and Maya at the same time. Her “worlds just collided” and she is fine [359].
