I thinks she first gets angry at school over the racism directed towards her. Really, nothing is done about it. The book mainly follows Maxine in her school life, describing the things she went through from an early age. She started school when she was five years old, and that was the first time she experienced any sort of racism. Even though it was happening in plain sight, her teachers didn’t bother standing up, defending or stopping the discrimination that was happening among the students. Maxine quickly learnt that this was normal.
