The happy prince was not happy after he was made statue, why?

The Prince (statue) notes that when he was alive in the palace of Sans-Souci he was never sorrowful and life was lovely. When he died, they set him up here and now he can see all the ugliness and misery of the city, and his leaden heart weeps.
