Nick discovers that Gatsby had bought his house across the bay from Daisy so he could stare at it. Yes, it's a little creepy but Gatsby was that obsessed with her.
"Then it had not been merely the stars to which he had aspired on that June night. He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendour."
It wasn't the stars but the lights of Daisy's house that Gatsby was so fixated on. This explains a lot about Gatsby's character and his motivations for doing the things he does.
